China's ocean-going cargo ship Dongfeng delivered

On December 31, 1965, China's 10,000-tonne ocean-going cargo ship "Dongfeng" (東風號) was delivered.

As the first 10,000-tonne ocean-going cargo ship independently designed and built after the founding of People's Republic of China, the materials and equipment that Dongfeng used were all domestic-made.

Dongfeng was manufactured by Jiangnan Shipyard (江南造船廠), with a total length of 161.4 metres, a width of 20.2 metres, and a depth of 12.4 metres.

Its load capacity and displacement reached 13,488 tonnes and 17,182 tonnes, respectively, providing strong endurance.

The design and construction of Dongfeng has greatly enhance the level of China's ship design and construction technology, as well as the production capacity of ship equipment.

It not only pioneered the independent design and construction of 10,000-tonne ships in China but also laid a foundation for the future mass production of large ships over 10,000 tonnes.

Following the announcement of the completion of Dongfeng, shipyards in Dalian, Tianjin, Guangzhou, and other places started to mass-produce more 10,000-tonne ocean-going cargo ships.

Subsequently, dozens of giant ships with names starting with "Yang" and "Feng" have been launched one after another.
