On March 1, 2019, Chengdu was awarded the right to host the 2021 Summer Universiade, becoming the third city in Mainland China to host the Summer Universiade after Beijing and Shenzhen.
This event is also the first world-class comprehensive sports event successfully bid for in Western China.
On the same day, at the Executive Committee meeting of the International University Sports Federation held in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, Luo Qiang, the Mayor of Chengdu, signed the hosting contract for the 31st Summer Universiade in 2021 on behalf of Chengdu with the International University Sports Federation and the Federation of University Sports of China, marking Chengdu's acquisition of the right to host the 2021 Summer Universiade.
First held in 1959, the Summer Universiade is a world-class comprehensive sports event exclusively for currently enrolled university students and those who have graduated no more than two years prior (ages 17-28), and it is commonly known as the "Little Olympics."
In order to build a world-renowned sports event city, Chengdu formulated the action plan comprehensively promoting the creation of a city with first-class sports venues, top-brand events, a developed sports industry, rich fitness activities for all people, and a profound sports culture atmosphere.
