19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China

On October 18, 2017, the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was held.

The report delivered to the 19th National Congress stated that socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a "new era" and the principal contradiction in Chinese society has evolved into one between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people's ever-growing needs for a better life.

The report proposed that in the first stage from 2020 to 2035, China would build on the foundation created by the moderately prosperous society with a further 15 years of hard work to see that socialist modernisation is basically realised.

In the second stage from 2035 to middle of the 21st century, China should be developed into a great modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious, and beautiful.

At the same time, the report established the status of "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era".

The congress passed a resolution to amend the Party constitution, incorporating "Xi Jinping Thought" into it, alongside Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory, the Important Thought of the "Three Represents," and the Scientific Outlook on Development, thereby establishing it as a guiding principle for the Communist Party of China.
