China's first 10,000-tonne freighter "Yuejin" launched

On November 27, 1958, China's first 10,000-tonne ocean-going cargo ship "Yuejin" (躍進號) was launched.

The Yuejin was constructed by Dalian Shipyard according to the design blueprints of Soviet on a 10,000-tonne level berth renovated and expanded for this purpose, with a total construction time of 58 days.

The huge cargo ship has a total length of 169.9 metres, a width of 21.8 metres, and a depth of 12.9 metres.

Its designed draft is 8.5 metres, and the fully loaded displacement reaches 22,100 tonnes.

The Yuejin can sail at a speed of 18 knots per hour, with a cruising range of 12,000 nautical miles, and a carrying capacity of 13,400 tonnes.

As an advanced product among similar ships worldwide at the time, the Yuejin uses high-strength alloy plates, enabling it to navigate through ice-covered areas.

It is also equipped with advanced navigation instruments and high-power high-parameter steam turbines, allowing it to sail in any sea area without refuelling and reach major ports around the world.

It is the first 10,000-tonne class ocean-going cargo ship constructed by China, marking a new stage in the shipbuilding industry and ocean transport industry of China.
