Huizhou (惠州) is known as the "Lingnan famous county" of Huizhou, why is it also called "goose city"? What are the characteristics of this city?

28 ancient sites | One of the famous historical cities in Lingnan

Huizhou City, one of the famous historic and cultural cities in the Greater Bay Area, shows evidence of human activity dating back to the Neolithic Age, between 10,000 to 4,000 years ago.

Currently, there are 28 ancient sites found throughout Huizhou, with a large number of stone and pottery artifacts found there.

Huizhou was originally called Zhenzhou (禎州), but it was renamed "Hui" during the Northern Song Dynasty and has remained that way ever since.

Throughout history, many celebrities have lived here, such as the famous poet Su Dongpo, who stayed in Huizhou for three years and wrote many popular poems. This thousand-year-old city has accumulated a deep cultural heritage.

11,350 sq kilometres|Ranked second in GBA

Huizhou is a prefecture-level city located in the south-eastern part of Guangdong Province, at the eastern end of the Pearl River Delta and in the northern part of Daya Bay, with a total area of 11,346 square kilometres.

It ranks second among the 11 cities in the Greater Bay Area, after Zhaoqing.

It consists of two districts directly under the city administration (Huicheng District, Huiyang District), three counties (Longmen County, Boluo County, Huidong County), and two administrative management districts (HZZK Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone).

Huizhou has a resident population of about 6.066 million, ranking sixth in the Greater Bay Area, just after Hong Kong. In addition, Huizhou is also a famous Hakka (客家) emigrant hometown in Guangdong Province. It is one of the most important settlements of the Hakka people.

540.1 billion CNY in GDP|One of the cities with trillion industrial output value

In 2022, the total GDP of Huizhou was CNY 540.124 billion, with a year-on-year growth of 4.2%, the fastest in the province.

At the same time, the total industrial output value exceeded one trillion CNY, becoming the fifth city to join the national "trillion industrial city" array after Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, and Dongguan, showing a booming economic development.

Huizhou has distinctive industrial characteristics, focusing on the development of electronic information, petrochemical, clean energy and automobile and equipment manufacturing.

Like the Daya Bay Petrochemical Industry Pard, the scale of its refining and chemical integration ranks first in China.

The HZZK Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone is one of the first national electronic information industry bases in China, which are the two pillars of Huizhou's economic development.

62% forest coverage | Rich in natural and cultural landscapes

Huizhou, a city nestled in mountains and the sea, has a beautiful ecological environment. It has a forest coverage rate of 61.7%, and its air quality consistently ranks among the top ten in China.

It has diverse natural landscapes, including four national scenic spots: Luofu Mountain, Nankun Mountain, Huizhou West Lake and National Gangkou Sea Turtle Reserve.

Among them, Luofu Mountain is one of the top ten Taoist mountains in China.

In addition to natural landscapes, Huizhou, favored by literati and artists since ancient times, also has many captivating historical and cultural attractions, main sights include Hejiang Tower (和江樓), Chaojing Gate (朝京門), Pinghai Ancient City (平海古城) etc.

869 kilometres | A major transportation hub in eastern Guangdong

Known as the "Gateway of Eastern Guangdong", Huizhou serves as a transportation hub in the eastern Guangdong region, equipped with a robust transport infrastructure.

In recent years, Huizhou has heavily invested in infrastructure.

As of 2022, the city has a total of 869 kilometres of highways, ranking third in Guangdong Province for consecutive years.

The railway network spans 323 kilometres, forming a railway network of "three vertical, one horizontal and one connected" (「三縱一橫一聯」).

Huizhou Airport has opened 45 routes, covering 80% of the provincial capital cities in China.

There are 3 port terminals of 10 million tonnes, with a cargo throughput of over 90 million tonnes.

Huizhou has basically formed a three-dimensional transport system with five major modes of transport: road, waterway, railway, aviation and pipeline, and is actively moving towards high-quality social development.
