China's Xiamen Bridge opened to traffic

On December 19, 1991, the Xiamen Bridge (廈門大橋) was officially opened to traffic.

The Xiamen Bridge is China's first highway bridge spanning across the strait, with a total investment of 156 million CNY, a total length of 6,695.01 metres, a main bridge length of 2,070 metres, a bridge deck width of 23.5 metres, and a four-lane two-way vehicular traffic.

The Xiamen Bridge has a daily traffic capacity of 25,000 vehicle trips, greatly alleviating issues such as excessive vehicles entering and leaving Xiamen Island and poor road conditions on the seawall road.

At the same time, the Xiamen Bridge has also greatly strengthened the connection between Xiamen City and the districts outside the island, various regions within the province, and neighbouring Guangdong Province, further enhancing the development of the Xiamen Special Economic Zone.
