China hosted the Asian Games for the first time

The Beijing Asian Games opened on September 22, 1990.

The 11th Asian Games not only marked the first time China hosted the Asian Games in the 40 years since its inception, but it was also the first time China held a comprehensive international sports competition.

The Beijing Asian Games had as many as 36 delegations, excluding Jordan and Iraq, all other members of the Asian Olympic Council sent teams. There were 6,122 athletes in total participating in 27 sports and 2 demonstration sports. In terms of the medal tally, China topped with 183 gold medals, followed by South Korea and Japan in second and third place respectively.

The mascot of the Beijing Asian Games is "Panpan"(盼盼), which is a panda holding a medal. The prototype of Panpan is "Bas"(巴斯), a giant panda from the Fuzhou Panda Research Centre, and the designer is Liu Zhongren(劉忠仁), a national first-class artist.
