On September 10, 1997, the construction of the first Shaanxi-Beijing natural gas pipeline was completed.

China's Shaanxi-Beijing Pipeline I (陝京一線) began in May 1996, with a total investment of 3.95 billion CNY. With a length of 853.23 kilometres, it was once the longest onshore gas pipeline in China, and the first in China to be of large diameter, long distance, and fully automatic.

The pipeline starts from the western Jingbian station of the Changqing gas field and ends at the Yamenkou station in the Fangshan district of Beijing.

Natural gas from Changqing was introduced to Beijing, improving the city's environment and energy structure, and enhancing the quality of life of the people.

Moreover, the pipeline made a historic contribution to Beijing's bid for the Olympics and the successful hosting of the 2008 Olympics and Paralympics. It also has significant importance to the economic development of areas along the pipeline.

Today, the Shaanxi-Beijing natural gas pipeline system is an important part of the national natural gas "One Network." The total mileage exceeds 5,300 kilometres, with a designed pipe-transport capacity of 80 billion cubic metres per year.

Nine storage facilities have been build as part of a support structure, with a total working gas volume of 23 billion cubic metres, a maximum daily peak-shifting gas supply capacity of 40 million cubic metres.

And its gas supply range covers three provinces, two cities, and an autonomous region including Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Hebei, Beijing, and Tianjin.
