China's symposium on some coastal cities held in Beijing

From March 26 to April 6, 1984, a symposium on China's some coastal cities was held in Beijing.

The theme of this symposium was to study Deng Xiaoping (鄧小平)'s important opinions on opening to the outside world and the work of special zones mentioned in his previous talks. It also focused on discussing how to accelerate the pace to better utilise foreign capital and introduce advanced technology.

The city representatives attending the symposium were from Tianjin, Shanghai, Dalian, Yantai, Qingdao, Ningbo, Wenzhou, and Beihai, as well as representatives from the special zones of Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Shantou, Xiamen, and the Hainan Administrative Region, and the responsible leaders of Liaoning, Shandong, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong Provinces, and Guangxi Autonomous Region.

The symposium suggested further opening up 14 coastal port cities: Tianjin, Shanghai, Dalian, Qinhuangdao, Yantai, Qingdao, Lianyungang, Nantong, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Zhanjiang, and Beihai, and implementing a series of policies and measures to expand city authority and grant certain benefits to foreign investors.

Hu Yaobang (胡耀邦), the General Secretary of the Central Committee of Communist Party of China, and other leaders attended the meeting. After the meeting, Deng Xiaoping and State President Li Xiannian (李先念) met with all the attendees.
