Shanghai Oriental Pearl Tower opened to the public

On November 18, 1994, the Shanghai Oriental Pearl Radio TV Tower officially opened to the public.

The Oriental Pearl Tower was built in 1991 and completed in 1994. It is one of the most famous landmarks of Shanghai.

Located at Lujiazui on the banks of the Huangpu River in the Pudong New Area, the tower is about 468 metres high. Upon its completion, it was the tallest tower in Asia at that time and the third tallest in the world.

The Oriental Pearl Tower has the ability to broadcast 9 TV programmes and 10 FM radio programmes, covering the entire city of Shanghai and neighbouring areas within a radius of 80 kilometres, greatly improving the quality of reception and viewing.

In addition, the tower is one of the country's first batch of 5A-level tourist attractions, which integrated sightseeing, conferences, exhibitions, dining, shopping, entertainment, accommodation, and radio & TV broadcasting.

It is equipped with sightseeing facilities and features such as the Space Module, the revolving restaurant, the Shanghai History Museum, and more.

In terms of annual visitor numbers and tourism revenue, the Oriental Pearl Tower ranks second among the world's high towers, only behind the Eiffel Tower in France.
