What's special about Huawei's "pureblood" HarmonyOS NEXT?

China's mobile phone giant Huawei recently released the native HarmonyOS system, known as "Pureblood HarmonyOS," under the name HarmonyOS NEXT.

This is the first full-stack self-developed operating system of Mainland China.

Following Apple iOS and Google Android, Huawei's HarmonyOS has thus become the world's third major mobile operating system.

The so-called "pureblood" means that the HarmonyOS no longer relies on Google Android's open-source code project (AOSP) to provide core functions and only supports the HarmonyOS kernel and system applications.

This new design can cut out 40% of redundant code, significantly enhancing the smoothness, energy efficiency, and security of the system.

According to Huawei's Executive Director Richard Yu (余承東), HarmonyOS has succeeded in achieving "one system, unified ecosystem", connecting multiple devices and scenarios to allow the free flow of services and information.

Yu further stated that HarmonyOS has broken the long-standing dominance of mobile operating systems by Europe and the U.S., achieving a comprehensive breakthrough and making terminal operating systems self-controllable.

He also claimed that they have accomplished in 10 years what took their European and American counterparts over 30 years.

HarmonyOS ranks 2nd in China with over 15,000 native applications and meta-services

HarmonyOS was first released in 2019 and has since occupied the second leading position in the Chinese market, with over 1.1 billion lines of code, 6.75 million registered developers, and more than 1 billion HarmonyOS ecosystem devices.

HarmonyOS currently boasts over 15,000 native applications and meta-services available, with general office applications covering more than 38 million enterprises nationwide.

On the other hand, HarmonyOS has also made strides in artificial intelligence (AI), integrating native AI capabilities into the system for the first time. With the support of the Pangu large model, the virtual assistant "Xiaoyi" has greatly enhanced abilities of perception and reasoning.

In the field of information accessibility, HarmonyOS has also pioneered the world's first AI voice restoration function, which can instantly repair the sentences expressed by speech-impaired individuals and improve their expression clarity by over 80% in face-to-face communications.

The "pureblood" HarmonyOS Next is no longer compatible with Google Android applications and has been officially launched for public testing on models like the HUAWEI Pura 70 series, HUAWEI Pocket 2 series, and HUAWEI MatePad Pro 11-inch 2024 model.

More devices such as the Huawei Mate XT Masterpiece, nova flip, and nova13 series will be gradually added to the public test in 2025.
