First Shanghai International Film Festival

On October 7, 1993, the first Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) was inaugurated.

In the mid-1980s, following the Reform and Opening-up, Shanghai's film industry developed rapidly. Many esteemed artists hoped to ride the wave of cinema's development and actively proposed that Shanghai host an international film festival.

The first SIFF was the first international film extravaganza held in China. It was also the first and only international class A film festival in the Chinese-speaking region, known as a Competitive feature film festivals.

On the opening night, the newly built Shanghai Film City Main Venue welcomed nearly 1,000 guests from home and abroad.

The jury was chaired by famous Chinese director Xie Jin (謝晉). The international judges came from all over the world, including renowned Hollywood director William Oliver Stone, Japanese director Nagisa Oshima (大島渚), and Hong Kong director Tsui Hark (徐克), ensuring high standards and authoritative evaluation.

The first Shanghai International Film Festival featured 20 competition films and over a hundred exhibition films from 33 countries and regions. Five awards were given in total, including four Golden Goblet Awards and a Special Jury Award.

The movie "Hill of No Return"(無言的山丘) produced by the Central Motion Picture Corporation come from Taiwan won the "Best Film" award, and "Cageman"(籠民), directed by Cheung Chi-Leung (張之亮) and starring Chiao Hung(喬宏), Wong Ka Kui (黃家駒), and Liu Kai-Chi (廖啟智) from Hong Kong, received the Special Jury Award.
