Xi Jinping first proposed Belt and Road Initiative

On September 7, 2013, China's President Xi Jinping first proposed the Belt and Road Initiative (一帶一路倡議).

At that time, Xi Jinping, who was visiting Kazakhstan, gave an important speech titled "Promote Friendship Between Our People and Work Together to Build a Bright Future" at the Nazarbayev University.

In his speech, Xi explained China's friendly and cooperative policy towards Central Asian countries, advocating for innovative cooperation models to jointly construct the "Silk Road Economic Belt".

Xi Jinping stated that the "Silk Road Economic Belt" (絲綢之路經濟帶) would gradually form regional large-scale cooperation by connecting points to areas, and lines to plains, which would make the economic ties between Eurasian countries closer, mutual cooperation deeper, and the development space broader.

On October 3 of the same year, when Xi Jinping was visiting Indonesia, he proposed in his speech at the Indonesian Parliament that China would like to jointly build the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road" with Indonesia and other ASEAN countries.

The "Silk Road Economic Belt" and the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road"(21世紀海上絲綢之路) together constitute the Belt and Road Initiative.
