On July 4, 2012, the last 700,000-kilowatt generator of the Three Gorges Dam Project (三峽工程) was officially put into operation.
The Three Gorges Dam Project is the hydroelectric power station with the largest installed capacity in the world.
It comprises 32 water turbine generating units, each with a capacity of 700,000 kilowatts, located at the left and right banks and the underground power station.
Along with the two additional 50,000-kilowatt power units, the total installed capacity of the Three Gorges Dam Project reaches 22,500,000 kilowatts.
The last generating unit is located at the underground power station and was designed by domestic Chinese electric enterprises, with the mechanical and electrical construction undertaken by Gezhouba Group Mechanical and Electrical Construction Co., Ltd.
This generating unit adopts the technology of "stator winding self-circulation evaporation cooling" (定子繞組自循環蒸發冷卻), which is independently developed in China. It is the most domestically produced generator in the entire Three Gorges Dam Project.
The first generating unit officially entered into service and started generating power on July 10, 2003. After more than 10 years of installation and debugging, all 32 units were put into operation on July 4, 2012.
