27 May 1994

The new Shanghai University was formally established

On May 27, 1994, the new Shanghai University was officially unveiled. Qian Weichang, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, served as the chancellor. The name of the university was inscribed by Jiang Zemin, then President of the People's Republic of China.

The history of Shanghai University can be traced back to 1922. It was the first regular university founded by the Communist Party of China at that time.

In May 1983, the Shanghai Municipal Government decided to merge six schools: a branch of Fudan University, a branch of Shanghai Foreign Language College, a branch of East China Normal University, a branch of Shanghai University of Science and Technology, a branch of Shanghai Mechanical Institute, and Shanghai Art School to reinstate Shanghai University.

In April 1994, with the approval of the State Education Commission, Shanghai University of Technology, Shanghai University of Science and Technology, Shanghai University, and Shanghai Higher Vocational School of Science and Technology merged to form the new Shanghai University.

Shanghai University is a comprehensive university key to the state's "211 Project". It is jointly founded by the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal Government. It is also a pilot for the first batch of high-level local universities in Shanghai and a university with first-class disciplines construction.

Shanghai University currently has 18,021 graduate students, 19,921 full-time undergraduate students, and 19,912 adult education students.
